Why we build in Oklahoma City

The best problems aren't on the coasts. A note on building an AI venture studio in the middle of the country, and why it is an advantage.

Oklahoma City is not a backdrop for Grey Haven. It is part of the operating model.

The work we care about is close to real industries: health systems, energy, logistics, agriculture, public services, construction, education, and the small networks that keep those systems moving. The people who know those fields are not waiting in San Francisco coffee shops for another generic agent demo. They are in offices, clinics, warehouses, barns, job sites, and city halls, trying to make hard work less brittle.

That proximity matters. When we build from Oklahoma City, the first question is not whether a market sounds fashionable. The first question is whether the work is real enough that a better tool would change the economics for the people doing it.

The middle is an advantage

A venture studio built in the middle of the country is forced to listen differently. We cannot depend on trend gravity. We have to earn trust through usefulness, responsiveness, and products that survive contact with production.

That bias is healthy for AI. The field is full of impressive demos that collapse once they meet messy inputs, changing constraints, and users with no patience for novelty. The Heartland tends to judge software by a simpler standard: does it help the work get done?

Better problems, clearer stakes

The best AI opportunities are often hidden inside specialized workflows. They involve judgment, context, exceptions, and tacit knowledge. They are too specific for generic software and too valuable to keep trapped in spreadsheets and inboxes.

Oklahoma City gives us a better view of those opportunities because we are surrounded by people who live them. The conversations are less abstract. The constraints show up early. The product wedge has to be practical.

Building from here

We still work with partners everywhere. But building from here keeps us grounded. It reminds us that AI should not just automate the internet's most visible work. It should help the experts who keep the physical economy, civic institutions, and regional industries moving.

Grey Haven exists for that kind of product: specific, useful, defensible, and shaped with the people who know the work.
