Model routing is becoming business infrastructure

OpenRouter joining Stripe turns model choice, routing, observability, and AI spend control into a market-structure question for production teams.

OpenRouter joining Stripe is a market-structure signal for production AI, not just an acquisition headline.

OpenRouter says it now serves more than 10 trillion tokens per day across 400-plus models and more than 10 million developers and companies. The company also says inference volume has grown at least 10x every year since it was founded, while promising customers that integrations, roadmap, name, and model-neutral routing will remain unchanged after the transaction closes.

The important part is the product category Stripe is buying into. OpenRouter is not a model lab. It is a gateway, marketplace, routing layer, observability surface, and spend-management point across many model providers. That means the control plane around inference is starting to look like payments infrastructure: abstract the messy supplier market, expose a clean API, optimize cost and reliability, and keep the buyer from being trapped by the first default provider.

Grey Haven's read: production AI teams should treat model routing as architecture, not procurement garnish. If inference becomes one of the largest operating costs in software, then model choice, fallback behavior, latency targets, audit trails, and cost caps need explicit ownership. Neutrality claims matter, but they should be verified in routing logs, contract terms, and failure behavior.

Operator watch item: inventory every workflow that assumes one model vendor is permanent. The immediate question is not whether OpenRouter stays neutral. It is whether the application can change routes without changing the business process. Teams should test that path before pricing, policy, or uptime pressure forces it.
