Agentic AI has a CPU bill too

NVIDIA's Vera rollout makes the hidden infrastructure around agents visible: orchestration, sandboxing, retrieval, tool use, and long-session coordination are not free.

NVIDIA's Vera CPU rollout is a reminder that agentic AI is not a GPU-only infrastructure problem. The company says Vera is now shipping at scale across the AI ecosystem, with systems delivered to major cloud providers and AI labs including AWS, Oracle Cloud Infrastructure, Anthropic, OpenAI, and SpaceXAI.

The source details are concrete. NVIDIA describes Vera as an 88-core CPU with 1.2TB/s memory bandwidth and up to 1.8x faster per-core performance on agentic AI workloads. It frames the need around work that surrounds inference: sandbox execution, tool calls, retrieval, code generation, orchestration, and long-context coordination.

Grey Haven's read: agent cost models are still too token-centric. A production agent is not a prompt wrapped around a model. It is a workflow runtime that spends time in CPU-bound coordination, file operations, policy checks, tool execution, queues, memory, and network paths. Those costs show up as latency, power, utilization, and operational complexity before they show up as a neat line item in an API invoice.

Operators should use this as a planning heuristic. If an agent workflow needs long sessions, many tool calls, parallel subagents, or sandboxed code execution, model price is only one part of the deployment economics. Capacity planning should include CPU saturation, memory bandwidth, sandbox startup overhead, queue contention, log volume, and permission-check latency.

This story gets more important if independent benchmarks confirm the agentic workload gains outside NVIDIA's own measurement stack. It gets less important if workloads consolidate back into simpler request-response inference.
