A composition cleanup can carry its own visual evidence

Surehand’s documented After Effects restructuring workflow rehearses changes before applying them. The useful opportunity is narrower than autonomous editing: making structural cleanup easier to inspect.

Retrospective coverage for the October 22, 2026 issue.

Reorganizing an animation should not quietly change its appearance. That is the useful constraint behind Surehand MCP v1.4.1’s documented After Effects precomp surgery workflow, available as of October 22, 2026. A precomp nests one composition inside another; unpacking it changes that structure. The pinned documentation describes planning the operation, rehearsing it on a scratch copy and comparing rendered frames before applying it—not simply trusting that a successful edit preserved the picture.

Its unprecompose action moves nested layers into the parent composition. A null layer carries the former precomp layer’s transforms, while expression rewrites redirect supported references to their new names or indices. These details matter because moving a layer is not just moving an image: its timing, parent relationships and expression references can affect the result. The documented workflow couples structural changes with a visual comparison through ae_prove_identical.

That comparison has an important boundary. The result reports which frames were compared; it is not evidence here of equivalence at every possible time or input. The documentation also explains a concrete failure: a scaled or rotated precomp may render differently because transforming its layers separately changes the resampling. A DIFFERS or NOT PROVEN result leaves the proposed operation unapplied. Unsupported configurations, including several effects, timing and expression cases, have documented refusal reasons.

Consider a hypothetical motion designer unpacking a nested title composition before handing a project to another editor. A report showing expression rewrites and compared frames could make that cleanup easier to review than an unexplained structural edit. Our inference is that the product opportunity lies in making narrow maintenance operations inspectable, rather than promising unrestricted creative autonomy. The intermediate benefit is evidence attached to the change—not a demonstrated saving in production time.

Refusals may make the tool less broadly convenient, and the supplied documentation does not establish real-world reliability or customer results. Even rollback needs care: it warns that After Effects can split undo steps and provides a checkpoint restoration route. The stronger proposition is therefore bounded: automate a supported restructuring, expose what was checked, and leave unresolved visual differences for the designer to judge.
